
Peninsula Co-op Donates $100,000 to New Cowichan District Hospital
Published on: July 9, 2025Peninsula Co-op is extremely proud to announce a $100,000 donation in support of the new Cowichan District Hospital, currently under construction in the Cowichan Valley. This contribution reflects the Co-op’s ongoing commitment to community health, well-being, and long-term support for the region’s growing needs.
The new hospital, slated to open in 2027, will serve as a modern and expanded facility designed to better accommodate the growing population of the Cowichan Valley and surrounding areas.
Some upgrades from current hospital:
- Emergency department is increasing from 17 to 45 treatment spaces, including a dedicated psychiatric zone with two seclusion rooms.
- Capacity for 204 beds, with over 80% private rooms (increasing from 148 beds.)
- 7 Operating rooms.
- Dedicated MRI.
- Pediatric unit will have eight beds, four of which can be used to provide care to pediatric mental health and substance use patients.
Environmentally friendly features:
- B.C.’s first fully electric hospital.
- 30% more energy efficient.
- 60% more water efficient.
- 75% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.
- Exploring ways to source locally grown foods, enhance garden spaces and protect natural habitats.
This hospital will have a lasting impact on the Cowichan Valley, and we’re proud to be part of a project that will provide exceptional care to families across the region.
