Frequently Asked Questions

What drives fuel prices?

The Canadian Centre for Energy is an excellent source of information about gasoline pricing and the energy sector in general.

Canadian Centre for Energy

No one likes it when gas prices increase. Some Co-op customers have suggested that Peninsula Co-op and Save-On Gas should not follow when our competitors raise their prices. While this strategy might yield some short-term benefits in terms of increased business, in the long-term it could be very harmful to the Co-op. Our small, locally owned company is not a large enough force in the marketplace to drive gasoline pricing. If we were to be perceived by one of our large, multi-national competitors to be engaging in a “price war”, their much deeper pockets would ensure they survived far longer than Peninsula Co-op. We believe it is not in the best interest of our members, our staff or the company to engage in this type of activity. Our pricing strategy will continue to be based on what’s happening in our marketplace.

What’s octane and what does my vehicle need?

Octane is a liquid hydrocarbon present in petroleum. Peninsula Co-op sells gasoline with different octane levels. Regular is 87, Midgrade is 89 and Premium is 91. Octane by definition is the resistance to burn; the higher the rating, the slower the burn.

Older engines with carburetors cannot accurately regulate the air / fuel mixture. The use of 87 octane gas often causes premature ignition that results in engine “knocking” or “pinging”. Higher octane fuel burns slower and reduces this problem.

Newer engines have fuel injectors which accurately control air / fuel mixture by computer. Originally, most fuel injected vehicles were designed to accept Regular or 87 octane gas. Many high compression engines of today however, like sports cars, certain luxury cars and SUV’s are designed to run on a higher octane fuel.

Check your Owner’s Manual to determine the right octane level for your vehicle.
